The Language Movement has a major cultural impact on Bengali society. It has inspired the development and celebration of the Bengali language, literature and culture. 21st February, celebrated as Language Movement Day or Shohid Dibosh (Martyrs’ Day), is a major national holiday in Bangladesh. In the world’s history, no other nation has had to struggle so much, shed so much blood only to be able to hang onto their right to speak their Mother Tongue.
In November 1999, UNESCO declared 21st February as International Mother Language Day and from 2000 it has been celebrated worldwide. It was designed to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
